FSSC 22000 Version 7 Has Been Published. Here are the Important Changes for Your Business
FSSC 22000 is a globally recognised, GFSI-benchmarked food safety management certification scheme. It combines ISO 22000:2018 with sector-specific Prerequisite Programme (PRP) standards and the additional requirements of FSSC 22000 and is widely accepted by retailers, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies as a credible benchmark for food safety management.
FSSC 22000 Version 7 brings meaningful updates across prerequisite programme standards, sustainability requirements, and food chain category structures. If your business is currently certified or working towards certification, here is what has changed and what it means for your business.
Why Was Version 7 Developed?
Four key factors drove the revision:
- The publication of the new ISO 22002-x:2025 series on Prerequisite Programmes
- The need to align with the updated GFSI Benchmarking Requirements v2024
- Strengthening the Scheme’s contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- General editorial improvements as part of continuous improvement
What Has Changed in FSSC 22000 Version 7?
New ISO 22002-x:2025 Prerequisite Programme Standards
The most significant change in V7 is the replacement of the existing ISO/TS 22002-x technical specifications and BSI PAS standards with the newly published ISO 22002-x:2025 series. This includes ISO 22002-100:2025, a new unified, cross-sector baseline standard that underpins all sector-specific PRP requirements. For many organisations, this will require a structured review of existing PRP documentation, internal audit tools, and cross-references built around the previous framework.
FSSC 22000 Version 7 Scheme Requirements
Organisations should review their existing programmes against the updated FSSC 22000 Version 7 requirements to identify any gaps and align their systems with the current scheme requirements. Updates include, but are not limited to, the following. within the additional requirement for Food Safety and Quality Culture, clause 2.5.8 (a & c). Key focus areas include ensuring sufficient resources are maintained and demonstrating commitment from all personnel towards food safety and quality culture. Reduced food defense and food fraud mitigation requirements due to the alignment of ISO 22002-100:2025.
GFSI Alignment
Version 7 aligns fully with the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements v2024, ensuring that FSSC 22000 certification continues to be recognised across global supply chains without additional audits or re-certification requirements.
Food Chain Category Structure
The food chain category and subcategory structure has been refined to provide greater clarity for certification scoping, particularly relevant for multi-category sites or organisations operating across more than one part of the food chain.
Sustainability
FSSC 22000 Version 7 strengthens the Scheme’s sustainability requirements. Safe Food Packaging design principles are now applicable to organisations involved in packaging design, reinforcing the Scheme’s commitment to reducing food loss and waste across the supply chain.
Auditor Qualifications & AI Governance
Updated auditor qualification requirements are aligned with the new food chain category structure. Notably, FSSC 22000 Version 7 introduces a governance framework for the use of AI in certification processes.
Transition Timeline
Certified organisations have a structured transition window:
- Audits against FSSC 22000 V6 remain valid until 30 April 2027
- Upgrade audits to FSSC 22000 V7 run from 1 May 2027 through to 30 April 2028
- Your practical transition deadline is your next scheduled surveillance or recertification audit
