Every product has an impact on the environment, including factors such as CO2 emissions, land use, and resource consumption. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Carbon Footprinting are methods used to assess the environmental performance of products and supply chains. These methods allow for comparisons between products or activities based on CO2 emissions, land use, and the identification of ‘hotspots.’ They provide insights into potential environmental improvements within the supply chain.
Through our dedicated Environmental Footprinting Team, we have been supporting numerous companies and organizations with LCAs and Carbon Footprints over the years.
We can assist you with the entire process of conducting an LCA or Carbon Footprint analysis, from initial drafting to interpreting the results for your products.
Investigating the impact of a product or process provides an opportunity for significant maturity in your sustainability journey. It offers key information to guide decisions in your activities and substantiate strategic choices.
Additionally, environmental footprinting information is particularly relevant for:
LCA is a technique for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with the life of a product or service, from cradle to grave.
For a product, ‘cradle to grave’ means that the impact will be assessed in five major phases of its life:
LCA, unlike carbon footprinting, does not measure only CO2 emissions. It takes into account multiple environmental parameters that the product or activity can affect. Some of these impacts may include climate change, ozone depletion, eutrophication, acidification, human toxicity, ecotoxicity, land use, and resource depletion, among others.
Corporate carbon footprint studies are typically conducted at the organizational level. We assess the CO2 emissions (or their equivalent) of a company resulting from its activities, energy consumption, and the consequences of those activities.
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the world’s most widely used GHG accounting standard, defines a company’s emissions as follows:
In April 2013, the European Commission introduced a method for measuring and communicating the environmental performance of products and services throughout their life cycle. This method is called Product Environmental Footprint (PEF).
Since 2015, our Sustainability Expertise Branch (formerly known as Blonk) has been actively involved in the development of the European PEF, particularly focusing on beer and animal feed data and revising the overall methodology.
We provide comprehensive training to conduct Environmental Footprinting studies based on our expertise and knowledge of regulations.
For years, we have specialized in agri-food sustainability and have developed a strong knowledge of the different sectors, their specific impacts, and challenges.
Our growing teams of Agri-food, Sustainability experts, Data Specialists and Software Engineers are passionate about promoting more responsible practices and sustainable solutions within the Agri-Food system.
As leaders in Agri-Food sustainability, we have developed a globally recognized software solutions to assist stakeholders in this ecosystem in assessing their impact.
LCA and Carbon Footprints are conducted following standardized and internationally recognized methods, such as ISO 14040/44. We are meticulous in using dependable data to ensure consistent and transparent results.
| LCA/footprint | Internal/external use | Review/verification | Data | Deliverables | Project duration |
| Screening LCA | Internal | Internal review | Company specific | Report and/or presentation | 1,5 month |
| Product LCA | External | Independent review (1 expert) | Company specific & supply chain specific | Report and presentation | 2,5 months |
| Comparative LCA | External | Independent external review (3 experts) | Company specific & supply chain specific | Report and presentation | 5 months |
