Microplastics in Cosmetic Products

Microplastics

Cosmetic products intentionally incorporate microplastics, commonly for exfoliation and cleansing purposes, including toothpaste formulations.

Microplastics, prevalent in skincare and dental care items, constitute a minor fraction (2%) of global oceanic microplastics release.

Regulation

ECHA initiated public consultation in March 2019 to restrict intentional microplastics usage in EU/EEA markets, aiming to curb environmental release and prevent 400,000 tons of microplastics over two decades.

Proposed restrictions target 16 commonly used microplastic ingredients in leave-on and rinse-off products, comprising approximately 24,172 formulations.

Actionable Measures

Diverse plastic types pose challenges in microplastics analysis, lacking recognized methodologies.

Leveraging Mérieux NutriSciences laboratories’ extensive experience, specific methods are developed and validated for various matrices, encompassing detergents, cosmetics, drinking water, milk, beverages, mineral salts, fish products, and environmental samples.
