SPECIAL SESSION: 19th October, 4:15 pm – 4:45 pm

Environmental Footprinting in Retail:

The need for consistent methodology & supply chain data

To analyse and compare the environmental performance of a food product in retail, a consistent life cycle assessments (LCA) methodology and high-quality supply chain data are necessary to enable fair and realistic comparisons of food products.

Blonk, a Mérieux NutriSciences company, collaborated with Foundation Earth to develop a harmonized LCA method aligned with the European Commission’s PEF. This method addresses aspects such as system boundaries, functional units, data quality, and calculation rules. In parallel, Blonk and Albert Heijn created an automated LCA tool to consistently gather farm data. Thereby advancing environmental footprint analysis.

During this session, Blonk will present their work on harmonizing LCA methodology and share Albert Heijn’s sustainability ambitions and experiences with farm-level data collection.
