Authorization of three new Steviol glycosides: Rebaudiosides M, D and AM
On October 11th 2022 the Regulation (EU) 2022/1922 was published, outlining the specifications for food additives; specifically the specifications for rebaudiosides M, D and AM.
Three new steviol glycosides, as well as their specifications, have been added to Regulation (EU) 231/2012, following their validation by EFSA in June 2021. These are E 960c (ii), (iii) and (iv), corresponding respectively to rebaudiosides M, D and AM, produced by enzymatic conversion of rebaudioside A from highly purified extracts of Stevia leaves, using enzymes produced by genetically modified microorganisms derived from E. coli K-12 strains.
In addition, the purity criteria for E 960c (i) Rebaudioside M produced by enzymatic modification of Stevia-derived steviol glycosides are supplemented by the requirement of absence of detection of viable cells and DNA of genetically modified yeasts producing the enzymes for the conversion of rebaudioside A to rebaudioside M.
This Regulation shall enter into force 31st October 2022. This Regulation shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States.
