Titanium dioxide: feed recall date approaching!
Based on EFSA’s negative opinion of 5 May 2021 on the safety of use of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in animal feed, feed materials and compound feed made directly with the additive TiO2 or premixes that in turn contained it must be withdrawn by 20 June 2022.
Please refer to the official Regulation.
Titanium dioxide is no longer considered safe as a feed additive.
The EFSA opinion expresses the impossibility of assessing the titanium dioxide safety in order to exclude its genotoxic potential, which has raised obvious concerns for target species (especially for long-living animals and reproductive animals), consumers and professional users. Indeed, EFSA pointed out that, if inhaled, titanium dioxide is potentially carcinogenic to workers and, as the genotoxicity of its particles cannot be excluded, it must be considered a further potential source of concern for those directly involved in processing the additive.
According to the opinion, EFSA consequently denied the authorisation of TiO2 as an additive for use in animal nutrition under Regulation (EC) No 1831/20033.
