These compounds endure without degrading when exposed to air, water, or sunlight, allowing them to spread over long distances and accumulate in organisms, including humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pfas-contamination-pathways\">PFAS Contamination Pathways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of chemical stability they can run long distances through the air, thus contaminating sites far away from the production plants and affecting living organisms where they may bioaccumulate.<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EPA,&nbsp;United States Environmental Protection Agency<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<strong>aquatic environment<\/strong>&nbsp;faces significant&nbsp;<strong>PFAS contamination<\/strong>, as seen in&nbsp;<strong>Italy\u2019s 2013 PFAS alert<\/strong>, attributed to industrial discharges. Studies have verified the presence of PFASs in food packaging, particularly in fast food containers requiring oil-resistant coatings.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-27722_2c33d7-40 .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-27722_2c33d7-40 .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-27722_2c33d7-40\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-growing-concerns-amp-awareness\">Growing Concerns &amp; Awareness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prevalence of PFAS contamination in&nbsp;<strong>water<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>food<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>food packaging<\/strong>&nbsp;raises significant concerns among consumers, especially since comprehensive scientific studies assessing potential health risks are still ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the ongoing research and the absence of unified legislation, global awareness of PFAS risks continues to grow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The list of POPs \u2013 Persistent Organic Pollutants \u2013 includes <strong>PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, related salts and derivatives<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On 9 July 2020, the European&nbsp;<strong>Food Safety Authority (EFSA)<\/strong>&nbsp;adopted an opinion on the risk to human health related to the presence of perfluoroalkyl substances in food. EFSA concluded that PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, and PFHxS can cause developmental effects and may have adverse effects on serum cholesterol, the liver, the immune system, and birth weight. It considered the effects on the immune system the most critical and established a group tolerable weekly intake (TWI) of 4.4 ng\/kg body weight per week for the sum of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, and PFHxS, which is also protective against the other effects of those substances. It concluded that the exposure of parts of the European population to those substances exceeds the TWI, which is of concern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In February 2023, five EU Member States proposed a restriction aiming to ban the manufacture, use, and placing on the market of <strong>over 10,000 PFAS<\/strong>, which is currently under evaluation by ECHA\u2019s scientific committees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M\u00e9rieux NutriSciences offers <strong>comprehensive analysis services for PFAS in food, water, and food packaging<\/strong> using various technical approaches, including advanced LC\/ESI-MS\/MS methods. In 2023, these limits were incorporated into <a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2023\/915\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Commission Regulation (EU) 2023\/915<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, on 26 August 2022, the European Commission published <a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/reco\/2022\/1431\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recommendation (EU) 2022\/1431<\/a> on the monitoring of perfluoroalkyl substances in certain foodstuffs. <strong>It recommended that Member States monitor the presence of PFAS in food between 2022 and 2025<\/strong>, especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/fruits-and-vegetables\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12696\">fruits, vegetables<\/a>, starchy roots and tubers, seaweed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/food\/food-categories\/cereals-flours-bakery-services\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"65621\">cereals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/food\/food-categories\/nuts-and-dried-druits\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"35868\">nuts<\/a>, oilseeds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/baby-food-safety-quality-sustainability\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12677\">food for infants and young children, baby food<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/food\/food-categories\/dairy\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12689\">milk<\/a>, molluscs, wild fungi, fish oil, foods of animal origin, non-alcoholic drinks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/food\/food-categories\/alcoholic-beverages-challenges-solutions\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"55605\">wine, and beer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pfas-in-food-packaging\">PFAS in Food Packaging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PFAS in food packaging have not been addressed in a harmonized way worldwide. However, starting in 2025, the <a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2025\/40\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2025\/40\/oj\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)<\/a> in Europe will include limits for PFAS in food contact materials.
