Sources of this pollution include textiles, tires, general waste, products containing microplastics, as well as equipment used in fisheries, agriculture, and industry. These particles exhibit <strong>long-term persistence<\/strong> in the environment due to their <strong>resistance to degradation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While marine microplastic pollution has garnered attention from the public and policymakers, recent reports have highlighted the omnipresence of microplastics in <strong>air<\/strong>, <strong>soil<\/strong>, <strong>sediments<\/strong>, <strong>freshwater bodies<\/strong>, <strong>plants<\/strong>, <strong>animals<\/strong>, and even parts of the <strong>human diet<\/strong>, raising further concerns (<a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/en\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/f235d1e3-7c4d-11e9-9f05-01aa75ed71a1\/language-en\/format-PDF\/source-108645429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Environmental and Health Risks of Microplastic Pollution<\/em>, Scientific Opinion<\/a> \u2013 European Commission).<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-12661_700c6d-3b .kt-block-spacer{height:60px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-12661_700c6d-3b .kt-divider{border-top-width:1px;height:1px;border-top-color:#eee;width:80%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-12661_700c6d-3b\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-proposal-for-a-regulatory-definition-of-microplastics-under-reach\"><strong>Proposal for a Regulatory Definition of Microplastics under REACH<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On August 30, 2022, the European Commission unveiled its proposal to <strong>restrict the market placement of microplastics<\/strong>, expanding the particle size covered and providing a transition period of up to 12 years for certain products. This restriction will be enforced under the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merieuxnutrisciences.com\/reach-2018-registration\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"12855\">REACH Regulation<\/a><\/strong>, the EU&#8217;s <strong>chemical framework<\/strong>.
