They are categorized into <strong>dioxin-like<\/strong> and <strong>non-dioxin-like PCBs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-dioxin-like PCBs (NDL PCBs)<\/strong> are persistent organic chemicals accumulating in the environment and humans, associated with various health effects. In food, the <strong>highest contamination levels<\/strong> occur in <strong>fish<\/strong> products, <strong>eggs<\/strong>, <strong>milk<\/strong> and terrestrial <strong>animal meat<\/strong>. In opposition, foods of <strong>plant<\/strong> origin show the <strong>lowest contamination levels<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/1701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EFSA Study from 2010<\/a>). Additionally, they are considered <strong>carcinogenic<\/strong>, posing a significant health hazard to consumers. Fortunately, not all congeners within this wide range exhibit the same level of toxicity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified <strong>17 dioxins (PCDDs and PCDFs)<\/strong> and <strong>12 PCBs as highly toxic<\/strong>, for which a <strong>toxic equivalency factor (TEF)<\/strong> has been established. This factor allows the toxicity of different dioxins and dioxin-like compounds to be combined, enabling the comparison of matrices with varying amounts of congeners.<\/p>\n<p>Maximum levels were established based on occurrence data compiled in the EFSA scientific report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/1701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Results of the monitoring of non-dioxin-like PCBs in food and feed<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/efsajournal\/pub\/5333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFSA confirmed the findings of previous assessments<\/a>, stating that dietary exposure to dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs\u2014environmental pollutants present at low levels in food and feed\u2014is a health concern. Data from European countries indicate that EFSA&#8217;s new tolerable intake level is exceeded across all age groups.<\/p>\n    \n href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2002\/32\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Directive 2002\/32\/EC<\/a> (amended by <a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/reg\/2012\/277\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Regulation No 277\/2012<\/a>) regulate the presence of dioxins and PCBs in food and feed, setting maximum levels for individual residues and their sums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maximum levels apply to <strong>17 PCDD\/PCDFs<\/strong>, <strong>12 dioxin-like PCBs<\/strong>, and <strong>6 non-dioxin-like PCB indicators<\/strong>, collectively representing more than half of those typically found in food and
