Job purpose:

The purpose of this position is to manage and steer new projects in the food labelling consulting and research department, which will include the following sections:

  • Food labelling
  • Legislation consulting
  • Sensory and Organoleptic trials
  • Technical Support

Ensure expertise are built up and maintained in the area of food legislation in terms of National and International regulations, in order to ensure legal compliance.

Ensure that all work is completed in an accurate and timely manner.

Job description:

  1. Labelling and Legislation Consulting
    1. Labelling consultations for Swift Silliker’s labelling consulting services: Legal Label Assessment, Labelling reviews according to current legislation, production of labelling drafts, and compilation of nutritional information adaption of foreign and local labels.
    2. Reporting (using different reporting options) for consulting services.
    3. Compiling quotations, proposals and contracts after liaison with clients.
    4. Responsible for monthly planning and time-keeping.
    5. Communication department capacity and service delivery issues to management.
    6. Setting-up a labelling and legislation resource centre; both electronic and hard-copy.
    7. Stay abreast of developments in legislation (local and international) through available library resources, peer expertise and technical seminars
    8. Addition of new services relating to labelling and legislation based on customer demand and industry trend.
    9. Ensure that products offered stay abreast of service offerings of industry competitors.
  2. Sensory and Organoleptic trials
    1. Compiling protocols for Sensory and Organoleptic trials
    2. Understand service offering, standard operating procedures and general workings of the sensory and organoleptic services.
    3. Communication and interpret test results to clients.
    4. Compiling reports for Sensory and Organoleptic trials.
    5. Performing research to ensure protocols are relevant.
    6. Consolidation of results from trials
    7. Compiling and managing panels for Sensory and Organoleptic trials.
  3. Technical Specialist
    1. Attend technical committee, advisory group, regulatory  and consultation meetings as representative for Swift Silliker.
    2.  Internal communication of new and amendments to standards/regulations etc
    3. External communications and information sessions.
    4. Implementation and management of system for documents and standards/regulations.
    5. Responsible for technical compliance and know-how of company.
    6. Formal registration with relevant industry organizations.
  4. Technical Liaison
    1. Client liaison to assist with compiling accurate protocols.
    2. Quotation for sensory and organoleptic and consulting services.
    3. Liaison with clients to explain results and suggest solutions.
    4. Liaison with sub-contractors to ensure results are on time and assist with methodology and technical queries where required.
    5. Stay abreast of technical developments regarding food labeling and legislation.
    6. Act as the liaison between the lab and assigned clients to provide seamless service to the clients.
    7. Work closely with Sales, Operations and IT to effectively coordinate projects to meet client requirements.
  5. Financial
    1. Responsible for monthly expenses relating to the department.
    2. Ensure that all work done in invoiced on a monthly basis

Minimum preferred qualifications


  • Formal qualification in B.Sc (with Biochemistry), B.Sc. Food Science, ND. Food Technology or other relevant diploma with Biochemistry
  • Computer literate (MS Word, MS Excel, LIMS, Outlook, Internet, CRM)
  • At least 5 years industry experience which include project management, client liaison and basic sales experience
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good communication skills


  • Knowledge about the South African and International legislation
  • Able to work well under pressure and stick to deadlines
  • Good time management abilities
  • Previous experience with nutritional analyses

Merieux NutriSciences in Claremont, Cape Town, has a vacancy for an IT Systems Administrator to take responsibility for the effective provisioning, installation / configuration, operation, and maintenance of hardware and software (i.e. LIMS, CRM) systems and related infrastructure, as well as web based systems. 

The incumbent will be responsible for: 

  • Introduction of new systems and hardware / software roll-outs
  • User requirement definition and development
  • Application development
  • System configuration and testing
  • Installation, implementation of ongoing support
  • System enhancements/upgrades
  • Bug fixes

The post will suit an individual with proven analytical ability and ability to learn new systems. 


  • Degree / diploma in Computer Science or related field (or similar)
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in LIMS development, MS SQL Server, Systems Analysis & Design
  • Able to work overtime and travel as needed
  • Experience in a laboratory environment (including instrument interfacing), will be an advantage.
