The quality of agrochemicals (such as plant protection products) and biocidal products used in the industrial sector has a direct impact on the environment and human health.
In order to be granted approval by government authorities, products must meet high quality standards and comply with safety regulations.
Mérieux NutriSciences provides highly specialized technical and analytical services for the worldwide registration and regulatory compliance of agrochemicals, biocides and chemicals (*).
Our safety and quality services provide the world’s leading manufacturers with reliable scientific data, including laboratory data and field studies, to determine the safety and efficacy of products. We ensure that products comply with international standards across an extensive range of parameters, including:
- Quality control and stability studies
- Physicochemical and technical properties
- Five-batch analysis and substance characterization
- Mutagenicity studies
- Toxicological studies
- Ecotoxicological studies and environmental fate and behavior studies
- Biocide efficacy studies
- Regulatory support and consultancy
Mérieux NutriSciences offers scientific excellence, top-level quality standards (GLP/OECD, ISO 17025), and best-in-class services according to good laboratory practices (GLP).
Agrochemical services are not offered on-site in our South African laboratories, however our international network supports us to meet your requirements. For further information, please contact Customer Care.

All our Tests and Services
Mérieux NutriSciences offers a comprehensive range of highly complex analyses for the registration and quality control of agrochemicals and biocidal products. Our testing facilities around the world are staffed by experts with over 20 years of knowledge and experience of agrochemicals.
Through our expertise and laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, we provide release testing services for bulk medicinal substances, agrochemicals and biocidal products.
We provide support for the following services:
- Physicochemical and technical properties
- Determination of active substances and impurities
- Stability studies
Mérieux NutriSciences can provide support in the development and validation of methods suitable for the quantitative determination and identification of active ingredients and toxicologically relevant or other impurities, in both agrochemicals and biocides.
Five-batch analysis is one of the key studies to be submitted for the registration of agrochemicals and biocidal active substances. Its purpose is to identify and quantify active ingredients and impurities in five representative batches of the product.
Mérieux NutriSciences offers proven expertise in five-batch analysis, with experience of over 100 different active ingredients. Our experts continuously update their knowledge base and refine their analytical capabilities to meet evolving regulatory requirements. We perform a high volume of five-batch studies every year in our specialized labs.
Preliminary screening analysis
Screening analysis can be performed at Mérieux NutriSciences’ Shanghai facility, providing an assessment of impurities in an active substance or technical product prior to starting a five-batch study.
Our screening analyses provide accurate information about the chemical composition of technical products.
Furthermore, we develop and validate methods for the following types of determination:
- Optical isomers
- Degradation products (including forced degradation studies)
Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and establishing a European Chemicals Agency, is intended to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment.
Under REACH, all chemicals manufactured or imported in quantities of greater than one metric ton per year must be registered in a central database managed by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).
Mérieux NutriSciences can provide support for the full characterization of well-defined and UVCB substances, as well as compliance with the requirements of Annex VI of the REACH regulation.
Mérieux NutriSciences offers a comprehensive set of tests suitable for evaluating the physical and chemical properties of technical products, active substances and formulated products. Our experts are equipped to perform a broad range of studies required for the registration of agrochemicals and plant protection products. All tests are performed in compliance with official (e.g. CIPAC, OECD) and internally validated methods.
The Mérieux NutriSciences laboratories can perform toxicological tests to assess the potential health hazards of agrochemicals, biocidal products and other chemicals. Our agrochemical experts conduct a wide range of toxicological tests in accordance with good laboratory practices (GLP) and all worldwide quality and safety standards.
Mérieux NutriSciences can perform all necessary toxicological tests in accordance with current legislation.
The Mérieux NutriSciences laboratories can perform mutagenicity and genotoxicity tests. We offer a screening program to identify substances, agrochemicals and biocidal products that may cause permanent and transmissible changes in the amount or structure of a single gene or gene segments, a block of genes or chromosomes.
The aim of genotoxicity testing is to predict the genotoxic potential of a substance, to identify genotoxic carcinogens at an early stage and to understand the mechanism by which some carcinogens and reproductive or developmental toxicants induce germ-line mutations that can lead to inherited disorders.
Our experts conduct mutagenic tests according to good laboratory practices (GLP) and all worldwide quality and safety standards.
Mérieux NutriSciences offers a comprehensive range of testing services to assess the environmental risk of agrochemicals and biocidal products, as well as the expertise to help you with global regulations.
Mérieux NutriSciences regularly performs studies to assess the efficacy of biocidal products.
All studies are conducted according to international guidelines and protocols in compliance with ISO 17025 or GLP quality standards.
Efficacy tests are performed on all formulations and treated polymers and textiles.
Mérieux NutriSciences Italy provides an extensive range of efficacy tests for biocidal products classified as insect repellents and insecticides in collaboration with external partners.
Mérieux NutriSciences works with qualified partners to support our clients in the registration of biocidal products in compliance with Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 and chemicals in compliance with Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006 (REACH).
