Food Packaging Testing

Mérieux NutriSciences verifies the compliance of food contact materials with international regulations with food packaging testing services.

There is always an interaction between food and packaging and this has to be investigated with the aim to guarantee packaging conformity and consumers’ safety any wastes that possess hazardous characteristics and have the potential to adversely affect public health and the environment.

Under normal or foreseeable conditions of use, food contact materials, and items should not:

  • Endanger human health
  • Imply an unacceptable change in food composition
  • Deteriorate the organoleptic characteristics

All materials that come into contact with food must be carefully controlled in order to avoid any risk of contamination and to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements. Migration contaminants to be monitored:

  • Heavy Metals
  • Melamine and Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates
  • Bisphenol A

Migration testing is general and specific test data for food packaging, kitchenware, and processing machines that come into contact with foods. It is a process where the chemicals are transferred into food under storage conditions.

With Mérieux NutriSciences, we can help you to collect data to ensure the safety and quality of the compliance of your products with international regulatory food safety standards such as BS EN 1186-1:2002 (Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs — Plastics —). We offer analytical testing services to support verifying the food contact compliances, including both overall and specific migration according to the type of packaging material.

Our testing services include but are not limited to:

Overall Migration

Overall Migration is the limit of the total amount of all non-volatile substances that can migrate into food or food simulants especially acetic acid, ethanol, and olive oil. The limit of Overall Migration is a measure of the inertness of the material. This analysis will not determine what substance has migrated, but the total amount of non-volatile substances released into food simulants. It is used in food contact regulations in Europe, China, and South America and among others.

Specific Migration

Specific migration is the quantification of certain individual substances based on toxicological data. It is necessary to know what kind of substances has been used in the production of the packaging product. This test is important as the specific migration limits for certain molecules are regulated by regulations. It identifies whether these substances can be found in the food or food simulant.
