For some particular substances, the legislation requires the respect of a maximum quantity, but not a specific migration limit, usually because these substances are volatile and it is therefore difficult or impossible to determine their specific migration.

Mérieux NutriSciences proposes various analytical techniques, specifically designed on the type of polymer and that allow the measurement of the maximum residual quantity of a substance after its complete extraction from the polymer itself. These analyses evaluate the compliance with the limit expressed as the maximum amount.

One of the screening approaches established by EU Regulation 10/2011 for global and specific migration is the determination of the residual content: it is based on the concept that the potential migration can be calculated on the residual content of migratable substances inside the material assuming that they migrate completely. In fact, if the content of a substance in the material is known or determined by an appropriate method, the value of maximum migration can be calculated assuming that there is a total transfer of this substance from the material to the food.

Mérieux NutriSciences proposes such an approach to evaluate the compliance of the amount of substance with migration limits.
