Microbiological parameters
The determination of microbiological contamination (bacteria, fungi, Legionella, etc.) on specific culture media and through a SAS sampler for the detection of the microbiological component -by means of the airborne or contact pads or plates for the evaluation of the microbiological component on surfaces- is of fundamental importance for the verification of the microbiological contamination of the places under investigation. It is a ubiquitous organism that especially proliferates in hot water environments, between 32 and 45 °C. Legionella infection is not transmitted from person to person, but it is rather transmitted via aerosol and contaminated water, as in the case of a conditioned environment or with humidifiers. The bacterium mostly reproduces in humid and warm or heated environments -such as piping systems, condensers, water cooling piping-, and then it forms a kind of bacterial film. For this reason, Legionella infection is a serious public health problem because it is an element of risk in all situations in which people gather in the same environment, as occurs in nursing homes, retirement homes, hospitals, swimming pools and spas and other public places where an air conditioning system or humidification of air treatment or water re-circulation are operating. Mérieux NutriSciences offers sampling and analyses both in aqueous and aeriform matrices for the determination and quantification of Legionella.
