The radioactivity measurement of soil is useful both to determine the contamination as a result of an accidental release, and for radio-ecological investigations, in particular to assess the extent and methods of radionuclide migration along upper and lower layers of the soil, the removal of radionuclides over time, the transfer of radionuclides from soil to plants, etc.

In sediments, radioactivity provides an indication of the long-term accumulation of radionuclides in sea water, rivers or lakes. In this way, the presence of contaminants can be finally detected (it is not detectable by mere water control).
