In vivo evaluations of the safety of cosmetics and personal care products are conducted on healthy human volunteers in accordance with international regulatory guidelines and in full compliance with the ethical principles set out in the Declaration of Helsinki. They are carried out by qualified and suitably trained technicians, and by a qualified dermatologist, ophthalmologist and dentist.

Mérieux NutriSciences performs the following clinical evaluations under strict medical control to ensure compatibility with human skin, eyes and oral use.

  • Skin compatibility: Test to confirm the absence of irritation after the first application of the cosmetic product. The test is performed under dermatological control on a panel of healthy volunteers with normal or sensitive skin. It is also possible to carry out a preliminary evaluation using a reduced panel of volunteers.
    • OCCLUSIVE PATCH TEST – 24 hours
    • OCCLUSIVE PATCH TEST – 48 hours
    • SEMI-OCCLUSIVE PATCH TEST
    • EPICUTANEUS TEST (OPEN)
    • TEST UNDER REAL CONDITIONS OF USE WITH DERMATOLOGICAL CONTROL. The product is delivered to the pre-selected panel of volunteers for regular daily use, and the dermatologist evaluates the absence of adverse reactions after the first application and at fixed intervals.

  • Ocular tolerance testing of cosmetics products that could come in contact with the eyes and adjacent area. The test is performed under ophthalmological control on a panel of healthy volunteers with normal or sensitive eyes, including contact lens wearers, and entails a self-assessed evaluation and an interview with an ophthalmologist.
    • TEST UNDER REAL CONDITIONS OF USE WITH OPHTALMOLOGICAL CONTROL. The product is delivered to the pre-selected panel of volunteers for regular daily use, and the ophthalmologist evaluates the absence of adverse reactions after the first application and at fixed intervals.

  • Mucosal tolerance testing: Tolerance by the mouth and teeth of oral care products used for oral hygiene, cleaning and freshening.
    • TEST UNDER REAL CONDITIONS OF USE WITH DENTAL CONTROL. The product is delivered to the pre-selected panel of volunteers for regular daily use, and the dentist evaluates the absence of adverse reactions after the first application and at fixed intervals.
