Mérieux NutriSciences determines physical measurements typically detectable in workplaces.

Noise
Noise is technically defined as “the mechanical energy propagation in an elastic fluid (gas, liquid, solid) and which is capable of exciting the sense of hearing”. From the physical point of view, sound is produced when an object or a surface vibrates rapidly enough to generate a wave of pressure in the surrounding air also called “sound wave”. Mérieux NutriSciences certified technicians with peculiar skills in acoustics perform:

  • acoustic impact forecast;
  • acoustic impact assessment;
  • sound assessment;
  • provisional assessment of sound.

Ambient noise
The assessment of environmental noise impact is a consultancy activity that allows determining if a work under investigation (infrastructure, industrial plant, etc.) complies with the emission limits and sound input of a specific area and areas adjacent to it. Thanks to the environmental noise impact assessment, the implementation and check of spatial planning contents is possible.

There are two different types of noise impact assessment:

  • acoustic sound assessment aiming at quantifying the level of noise in the area under transformation and ensure its conformity with law requirements; and
  • acoustic impact forecast performed before the execution of works, and acoustic impact assessment applied to existing situations.

Vibration
Exposure to vibrations can be subdivided into two categories: “vibrations transmitted to hand and arm” and “vibrations transmitted to the whole body" systems. Mérieux Laboratories NutriSciences perform analyses for both types.

Hand and arm
Mérieux NutriSciences laboratories check and evaluate human exposure to hand-transmitted vibrations according to UNI EN ISO 5349 standard. These results undergo another evaluation by qualified staff to verify the compliance with the limits set by the law.

Whole body
Mérieux NutriSciences laboratories check and evaluate human exposure to vibration transmitted to the whole body according to UNI ISO 2631 standard. These results undergo another evaluation by qualified staff to verify the compliance with the limits set by the law.

Microclimate
The microclimate of a work environment -namely the physical parameters (air temperature, average radiant temperature, air speed, relative humidity) that along with parameters such as metabolic activities and clothing characterize the thermal exchanges between the environment and workers- is a very important element of any risk assessment. In fact, both temperature and humidity of the workplace can compromise safety and health, but they also may be unsuitable for work and might create real feelings of discomfort. The assessment of the environmental microclimate and workers’ comfort is performed through the measurement of environmental and individual parameters: this is followed by the elaboration of specific comfort indexes that allow to numerically expressing the microclimatic conditions of an environment.

From the thermal point of view, Mérieux NutriSciences proposes the monitoring and measurement of the following types of environment:

  • Moderated

moderate environments, where comfort conditions can be reached;

  • Severe

Difficult environments where such conditions cannot be guaranteed and therefore workers’ health and safety must be ensured.
