Ecotoxicity evaluation aims at predicting the effects of pollution on biological organisms, preventing or remedying any detrimental effects as efficiently and effectively as possible. Mérieux NutriSciences offers a wide range of specific analyses to assess the potential risk in aquatic and earth ecosystems.
Ecotoxicology - Aquatic sector
Laboratory studies are carried out on algae, Daphnia, fish, living organisms in sediments and aquatic plants. Where applicable, studies are also accompanied by verification of concentration and stability tests.
Algae and aquatic plants
The inhibition studies on algae growth are carried out through different methods, in accordance with current OECD and EPA guidelines. According to the request, studies on algae can be conducted with different species of green, green-blue algae, diatoms or sea water diatoms. Even aquatic plants can be studied.
Acute toxicity and reproduction studies are conducted on the Daphnia magna and other invertebrates. Internal cultures of Daphnia are available. Test design is adapted to the different needs of the customer, abiding by evidence or application techniques.
Acute and prolonged toxicity studies, as well as those on the initial stages of the life cycle and life cycle itself (two-generation test) are conducted on hot or cold water fish such as Oncorhynchus mykiss, Brachiydanio rerio, Cyprinus carpio, and Pimephales promelas. Depending on the subject of study, static, semi-static or flow-through tests are performed.
Ecotoxicology - Land
All studies are planned and carried out by a team of scientists and highly experienced technical staff, in compliance with current guidelines (IOBC, OECD, ISO, EPA).
Studies are carried out to evaluate the potential effects on the emergence and initial growth of plants -thus observing the seeds germination and growth of plants- or to assess the potential effects on the parts of plants that are far from ground level. In collaboration with qualified partners, our labs can design sampling according to the OECD 208 “Terrestrial Plant Test - Seedling Emergence and Seedling Growth Test” to determine growth inhibition and reproductive capability of superior plants that soils treated in a certain manner may present.
Non-target soil organisms
In collaboration with qualified partners, the evaluation of soil microflora is carried out during the year using natural soils. This type of testing includes short-term respiration test, nitrogen transformation tests and the assessment of eco-toxicological effects on earth worms.
