It’s the most compact type of epoxide, known for readily turning into vapor. This indicates that it evaporates rapidly and doesn’t linger on surfaces for extended periods. Ethylene oxide serves as a fumigant for the food industry, safeguarding dried foods by thwarting microbial proliferation.

Why is it essential to test EtO residues?

Ethylene oxide is a toxic compound with carcinogenic and mutagenic concerns. The European Union (EU) has established specific Maximum Residual Limits (MRLs) for ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol in various food additives to address these health concerns. These limits range from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/kg. In contrast, the United States and Canada have implemented joint MRLs for ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol in certain products, such as spices, dried herbs, dried vegetables, and oily seeds, with 7 and 940 mg/kg limits.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establishes tolerance levels for ethylene oxide in food in the United States. Notably, the EU banned the use of ethylene oxide as a fumigant and pesticide back in 1991. Despite the longstanding restriction, testing efforts have intensified since 2020 following the detection of ethylene oxide in sesame seeds imported to the EU as a control measure.

The numerous food products underscore the necessity for stringent testing recalls due to ethylene oxide contamination exceeding EU MRLs. These related recalls are continuing, with thousands of conventional and organic items with long shelf-life dates, such as cereals, chocolate, biscuits, bread, crackers, spices, and bagels, affected.

How We Can Support the Market

Mérieux NutriSciences India provides EtO residual testing, or Ethylene oxide residual testing, using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) with a LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg in:

Tea

Rice

Spices

EtO residual testing is also available in our global testing laboratories for:

Sesame seeds

Bakery products

Cereals

Nuts

Pulses

Seeds-based products

Fruits and vegetables

Coffee

Dehydrated vegetables

Guar gum

Locust bean gum

Ask also for Safety HUD, Mérieux NutriSciences’ tool for worldwide food safety alerts monitoring, to see the complete list of alerts and notified products.

Mérieux NutriSciences’ reliable food testing laboratory network provides manufacturers with advanced scientific capabilities.
