They are also defined as <\/span><b>emerging and dangerous contaminants<\/b> <b>for the environment and human health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they are suspected carcinogenic, immunotoxic, and endocrine disruptors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food industry: several sources of contamination<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the major sources of contamination for the food industry?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environment (emissions, wastewater, waste)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soil pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Packaging and food contact materials<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these sources of contamination threaten<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food safety and consumer health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is changing at the regulatory level?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are no regulatory limits for PFAS in food.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, regulations are under discussion worldwide, including in Europe, USA, and China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Union is working on several regulatory drafts to introduce <\/span><b>monitoring guidelines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Maximum Limits (MRLs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a wide range of food products including products of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal origin,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products of plant origin, and baby food.
