hidden>\n                                                            <p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">European Union (Drinking Water) Regulations 2014 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstatutebook.ie\/eli\/2014\/si\/122\/made\/en\/print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">S.I. No. 122 of 2014<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The basic standards governing the quality of drinking water intended for human consumption are set out in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/1998\/83\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">EU Directive 98\/83\/EC<\/span><\/a>. Water for human consumption, whether in its original state or after treatment, regardless of origin is covered by\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">Directive 98\/83\/EC<\/span>\u00a0, it includes water used in the food industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">This legislation defines \u201cwater intended for human consumption\u201d as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022 all water, whether in its original state or after treatment, intended for drinking, cooking, food preparation or other domestic type purposes, regardless of its origin and whether it is supplied from a distribution network, from a private source or by tanker or similar means;<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0all water used in any food production undertaking for the manufacture, processing, preservation or marketing of products or substances intended for human consumption, unless the supervisory authority is satisfied that the quality of the water cannot affect the wholesomeness of the foodstuff in its finished form.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><br \/>\nother than<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0natural mineral waters recognised as such by the responsible authorities, as defined in the European Communities (Natural Mineral Waters, Spring Waters and Other Waters in Bottles or Containers) Regulations 2007 (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstatutebook.ie\/eli\/2007\/si\/225\/made\/en\/print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\"><i>S.I. No. 225 of 2007<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>),<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0water supplied in bottles or containers<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0waters which are medicinal products within the meaning of\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/data.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2001\/83\/oj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\"><i>Council Directive 2001\/83\/EC<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>\u00a0of 6 November 2001 on the Community code relating to medicinal products for human use<br \/>\n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0an exempted supply.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">An exempted supply means a supply of water which \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2022\u00a0constitutes an individual supply of less than 10 cubic meters a day on average or serves fewer than 50 persons,\u00a0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\">and\u00a0(ii)\u00a0<i>is not supplied as part of a commercial or public activity<\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>or<br \/>\n<i>\u2022\u00a0<\/i><span class=\"s1\">is used exclusively for purposes in respect of which the relevant supervisory authority is satisfied that the quality of the water has not influence, either directly or indirectly, on the health of the consumers concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>S.I. 122 of 2014<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">prescribes the quality standards to be applied, and related supervision and enforcement procedures in relation to supplies of drinking water, including requirements as to sampling frequency, methods of analysis, the provision of information to consumers and related matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a>\u00a0prepares and publishes annual reports on the results of the monitoring programmes carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In EU food law, where there is a reference to potable water, it is usually defined as water which meets the standards of this Directive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Where the water quality does not meet the specified standards, remedial measures are outlined in S.I.
