Machines used for food processing (domestic but also professional, for catering and restaurants, rather than for food production) are made of different materials and proving their suitability for food contact can be complex.
This category includes, for example, meat processing machines, kneading machines, slicers, vacuum systems, ovens, blenders, coffee machines, juicers.
The normative reference is Directive 2006/42/EC of 17 May 2006 (Machinery Directive), in particular Annex I, " Essential health and safety requirements relating to the the design and construction of machinery ". The directive states that materials which come into contact with or may come into contact with foodstuffs must comply with the relevant directives. Among the relevant directives, the Framework Regulation on materials and articles in contact with food, Regulation 1935/2004/EC, but also all the legal standards relating to the different materials that are used to build the machine. The purpose of the Regulation is to prevent the contamination of food products by the materials that make up the equipment.
The fact that the machines are made of different materials requires a careful evaluation of all the constituent parts and any tests must be differentiated, thus taking into account the different laws and applicable limits.
