Claim substantiation is the process of proving and documenting that claims made about products are true. Such claims may relate to health (e.g. does not contain parabens, phthalates, heavy metals, formaldehyde or nickel), or to performance (e.g. “This diaper is the most absorbent”, “This detergent removes every kind of stain” or “This deodorant doesn't stain clothes”). Every statement must be properly substantiated.
Manufacturers must ensure that the claims used to advertise their products comply with relevant legislation and, where claims are not specified by law, that they are sufficiently substantiated with up-to-date and relevant evidence. Product manufacturers may be called upon to provide substantiation (evidence supporting claims) by customers, official bodies or competitors. In the absence of such evidence, claims may be deemed misleading, which would clearly have significant negative consequences for the image both of the company and of the product.
