Today we meet Vania Bolzon, Microbiology Lab Manager. Vania began her career at Mérieux NutriSciences Italia when there were only 10 people in the Italian company… today we count 1400 employees!

Vania, you are one of the first ever employees of Mérieux NutriSciences Italia!
Yes, it is true. I joined Chelab, now Mérieux NutriSciences Italia, in 1985 right after my studies to become a chemical analyst. At that time the company counted 10 people, it was all to be built and it has been an adventure, year after year, until today that we are 1400 in Italy!

What were you involved in and what are you involved in today?
I started in the Food Department with a lot of enthusiasm. Initially I was placed as an analyst in the Basic Chemical Analysis Laboratory on water and milk.
At that time we were not yet providing microbiological analysis, so the management enrolled me in an advanced microbiology training course to develop the Microbiological Analysis Laboratory in food, at first we were 2!

So initially you were part of the Food Division of Mérieux NutriSciences, and then what?
Yes that’s right, from 1985 to 2014. Then I started the new career path: microbiological area of Pharma quality control.

How was it?
I had to challenge myself again, it was a very full time but I was rewarded for all the effort and commitment, and I became the Lab Manager.

Why did you decide to stay in Mérieux for so long?
I really enjoy my work and also the context, the team that supports me every day. In the last period, of course, I had to get away a little bit from what I consider my soul, which is pure analyst work, to devote myself to work management and organization. I try to do it the best I can, assessing all the needs of the people I work with, finding the right compromise but without being too emotional. I really care, however, because the Lab team is very motivated and always trying to find solutions to the challenges of each day.

How are you doing in the role of manager?
My intent is to grow the people I work with every day: when the student surpasses the master, the goal is achieved. I am very enthusiastic and satisfied with my work, so I try to transmit the same passion as well as pass on the necessary knowledge to the next generation so we can move forward. Today, the group consists of 18 people, a very diverse team in terms of age, personality and inclinations, but I can say that the spirit of collaboration always prevails.

What was the biggest challenge you faced?
Every day is a challenge; the pharmaceutical world is very dynamic. Managing the laboratory well from an organizational point of view, creating a good harmony while always ensuring the quality of service, are important and have to be ensured every day. Here, no day is ever the same, every morning I get up and start again.
