This method, exemplified by growing cells from a muscle or organ, allows controlled growth without the entire organ. It is applied in medicine for tissue regeneration and cell replacement. Advancements in cellular engineering offer potential in diverse fields like&nbsp;<strong>agri-food<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Cell-based food<\/strong>&nbsp;production involves culturing cells isolated from animals to develop&nbsp;<strong>meat<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>poultry<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>aquatic products<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>dairy<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>eggs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Precision fermentation<\/strong>\u00a0employs microorganisms to create targeted products like\u00a0<strong>proteins<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>vitamins<\/strong>, and human-identical milk\u00a0<strong>oligosaccharides<\/strong>. This technology has already been in use for years to produce medicines such as\u00a0<strong>insulin\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>food enzymes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-do-cell-based-food-and-precision-fermentation-products-stand-worldwide\">Where do Cell-Based Food and Precision Fermentation Products stand Worldwide?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-singapore\">Singapore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singapore Food Agency,\u00a0<strong>SFA<\/strong>, gave the first regulatory approval to sell cell-based meat in January 2020.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4060\/cc4855en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A comprehensive summary of the current situation of cell-based food at the worldwide level<\/a>\u00a0was published by FAO in\u00a0<strong>2023<\/strong>. It includes information from Israel, Qatar, and Singapore, with different scopes, structures, and contexts surrounding their regulatory frameworks for cell-based food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-europe\">Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Europe,&nbsp;<strong>EFSA&nbsp;<\/strong>is responsible for evaluating the safety of novel foods in the&nbsp;<strong>EU<\/strong>. Which includes those derived from new technologies such as cell culture and tissue engineering. During the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/events\/efsas-scientific-colloquium-27-cell-culture-derived-foods-and-food-ingredients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last EFSA colloquium<\/a>&nbsp;in May, a senior scientific officer at EFSA mentioned that they have not received any requests for the evaluation of food derived from cultured animal cells (lab-grown meat) yet. However, they have assessed several novel food ingredients produced through precision fermentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In July 2023, the&nbsp;<strong>Dutch government<\/strong>, in the absence of pre-market approval in the EU, passed a landmark agreement allowing for&nbsp;<strong>tastings<\/strong>&nbsp;and, therefore,&nbsp;<strong>consumer feedback ahead of market entry<\/strong>. They have also published a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.overheid.nl\/documenten\/39127f7e-b18b-4ddf-95a7-0be5ff660aed\/file\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code of Practice<\/a>&nbsp;for safely conducting tastings of cultivated foods in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-united-states\">United States<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last June 2023, two American companies producing cell-cultured meat received<strong>\u00a0approval from the Food and Drug Administration<\/strong>\u00a0(FDA) and the\u00a0<strong>United States Department of Agriculture<\/strong>\u00a0(USDA) to sell their products in the US. This is a significant milestone for the alternative protein industry, particularly for cell-cultured products. These companies have met all the regulatory requirements. They obtained a \u201c<em>No Question<\/em>\u201d letter from the FDA, labeling approval from the USDA, and USDA Grant of Inspection (GOI). They are now one step closer to bringing their\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/na.mxns.com\/blog\/cultured-meat-products-enter-us-market-usda-approved\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cultivated meat products to the market<\/a><\/strong>, marking a historic achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fao-s-food-safety-hazards-identification\">FAO\u2019s Food Safety Hazards Identification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FAO experts published the report of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.4060\/cc6967en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cell-based food: its safety and its future role<\/a>\u201d (July 2023) Stakeholder roundtable meeting in Tel Aviv, September 2022. The meeting provided an overview of the 2022 status of the topic of cell-based food development and presented the potential&nbsp;<strong>complexities of conducting food safety hazard identifications<\/strong>&nbsp;for cell-based food. In collaboration with WHO, FAO held a session during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/fao-who-codexalimentarius\/sh-proxy\/en\/?lnk=1&amp;url=https%253A%252F%252Fworkspace.fao.org%252Fsites%252Fcodex%252FMeetings%252FCX-701-45%252FCRDs%252Fcrd04x.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">45th Codex Session<\/a>&nbsp;on November 8, 2022, in Singapore. This session gathered a group of&nbsp;<strong>23 experts<\/strong>&nbsp;from&nbsp;<strong>15 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;conducted the food safety hazards identification for cell-based foods. The Technical Panel considered all potential hazards to develop an exhaustive list based on the four stages of cell-based food production:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cell-sourcing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cell growth and production<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cell harvesting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experts found that with cell-based food,&nbsp;<strong>many hazards are already well-known<\/strong>, and they exist in conventionally produced food. A new meeting is scheduled for November 2023 in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-institut-kirchhoff-berlin-and-merieux-nutrisciences-can-support-this-emerging-industry\">The Institut Kirchhoff Berlin and M\u00e9rieux NutriSciences can Support this Emerging Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At M\u00e9rieux NutriSciences, our scientists have diligently followed the developments in this nascent industry.
