United States Department of Agriculture’s Catherine Woteki to Keynote International Association for Food Protection Silliker Lecture

May 14, 2012 – Chicago, IL: Dr. Catherine Woteki, Under Secretary for USDA’s Research, Education, and Economics (REE) Mission Area, will keynote the John H. Silliker Lecture during the 2012 Annual Meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP). Dr. Woteki, who also serves as the Department’s Chief Scientist, will address “Challenges in Food Security and Food Protection.” The meeting will be held July 22nd -25th in Providence, Rhode Island.

“Building a sustainable food supply for our expanding global population is a real concern for societies everywhere,” said Dr. Russell S. Flowers, Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer of Mérieux NutriSciences Corporation. “Dr. Woteki will explore the scientific innovations, tools and technologies that are helping us face this formidable challenge.”

Prior to joining the USDA, Dr. Woteki served as Global Director of Scientific Affairs for Mars, Incorporated, where she managed the company’s scientific policy and research on matters of health, nutrition, and food safety. From 2002-2005, she was Dean of Agriculture and Professor of Human Nutrition at Iowa State University. Dr. Woteki served as the first Under Secretary for Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1997-2001, where she oversaw food safety policy development and continuity planning.

Her career in government has also included tenures with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Woteki received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Now in its ninth year, the lecture series honors the scientific legacy of Dr. John H. Silliker, founder of Silliker. Dr. Silliker is retired and currently resides in northern Indiana.
